COLLABORATION BETWEEN EEL–NKUA AND THE FULBRIGHT FOUNDATION: HOSTING AND SCIENTIFIC SUPPORT OF A RESEARCH PROJECT ON CITIZEN SCIENCE AND OUTDOOR LEARNING

The Environmental Education Lab (EEL) of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA) will host and provide scientific support for the research project of Ms Alison Wood, Science Teacher in Duluth, Minnesota, and U.S. Fulbright Distinguished Teacher.

Ms Wood’s research project, which will be implemented under the scientific supervision and support of the Director of EEL–NKUA, Professor Maria Daskolia, focuses on the exploration of good practices in the integration of citizen science into outdoor learning initiatives implemented by teachers in schools across Greece.

As part of the preparation and design of the research, a working meeting between Ms Wood and Professor Daskolia took place on Tuesday, 10 February. The discussion focused, among other topics, on:

  • the research methodology and implementation timeline,
  • the use of EEL’s scientific expertise, infrastructure, and collaborating citizen science platforms, as well as the experience and research outcomes from its participation in the European project Cos4Cloud,
  • the potential of citizen science as an educational practice contributing to the achievement of the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs),
  • the development of professional development actions and programmes for teachers, networking between schools and educators in Greece and the United States, and
  • the exploration of opportunities for further international collaboration.

The collaboration between EEL–NKUA and the Fulbright Foundation strengthens the international role of the Laboratory in educational research and reaffirms its commitment to supporting innovative, collaborative, and socially oriented research initiatives in the field of education sciences.
