The Practicum constitutes an optional educational activity of the curriculum and is offered as a Free Elective Course, either in the 5th or 7th (winter) semester with course code 74TEK114, or in the 6th or 8th (spring) semester with course code 74TEK128 and is graded on a scale of 0-10. The Practicum corresponds to 5 ECTS, as stated in the Curriculum and the Study Guide of the Department of Educational Studies. The grade and the corresponding ECTS are recorded in the Student’s diploma supplement and transcript of records, and are not included in the calculation of the overall grade or the total ECTS required for the degree.
The Practicum is open to 3rd or 4th year students, as well as “students eligible for graduation”, provided that they have successfully completed at least twenty-five (25) courses of the Undergraduate Curriculum. For 3rd year students (5th or 6th semester), the prerequisite is successful completion of the course “Contemporary Learning Theories”, while for 4th year students (7th or 8th semester), the prerequisite is successful completion of the course “Theory and Methodology of Teaching”. Students with disabilities or serious health conditions are given priority, provided that a) they are 3rd or 4th year students or "students eligible for graduation" and that b) they have successfully completed at least 25 courses. The requirement to successfully complete the above-mentioned courses also applies to them. Cases of students with disabilities (people with disabilities or serious health conditions. If they are registered with the Accessibility Unit, they will receive the corresponding points from it).
The selection criteria for students for the Practicum in the order defined by the General Assembly of the Department at its 15th session of the 2024-25 academic year (02/07/2025), are available on the website of the Department of Educational Studies (see the Department’s Internal Regulation), on the e-class course page and via the link to the Student Practicum Office, as referred to in the Internal Regulation for the Department of Educational Studies (http://praktiki.uoa.gr).
In the event of a tie in the final evaluation grade, the student with the highest average score will be given precedence in the “Practicum Selection List”.
The total duration of the Practicum for the Department of Educational Studies is two (2) months full-time, i.e. 8 hours per day/40 hours per week or four (4) months part-time, i.e. 4 hours per day/20 hours per week, for the period from the approval of the final selection results until the end date of the programme.
The Practicum may be carried out in public services, legal entities governed by public law, first and second level Local Government Organizations, private law legal entities and enterprises, hereinafter referred to as "Host Organizations", under the guidance of a Host Supervisor and under the supervision of a lecturer of the Curriculum of the Department of Educational Studies at NKUA.
The Practicum, as an optional educational activity of the curriculum of the Department of Educational Studies, aims at the practical application of the theoretical academic knowledge acquired through successful completion of the curriculum as well as at familiarizing students with a real work environment. The goals and benefits of the Practicum include:
• the acquisition of professional and prior work experience, through assuming responsibilities and developing various skills (communication, teamwork, the use of modern technologies, etc.),
• the familiarization with production and administrative procedures, in private and public sector organizations, institutions and enterprises across all branches of Pedagogy,
• the development of the trainees’ targeted professional orientation for seeking suitable employment after completing their studies,
• the mutual familiarization and interaction between host organizations and their potential future staff,
• the continuous, dynamic and fruitful communication between the Department of Educational Studies, its students and the organizations, market actors and enterprises.
The Department of Educational Studies is responsible for the selection and placement of students with Host Organizations for the Practicum, in accordance with the criteria defined in this Undergraduate Level Practicum Regulation.
The compensation for students selected to undertake the practicum will be €350 (Euros), per month for full-time Practicum, or €175 (Euros), per month for part-time Practicum, an amount which also includes accident insurance coverage.
Students are selected by a three-member Evaluation Committee based on the criteria determined by the Department's General Assembly, which decides on the composition of the Evaluation Committee and the appointment of the Practicum Supervisor.
