LABORATORY OF SPECIAL EDUCATION AND FAMILY COUNSELING

The Laboratory of Special Education and Family Counseling functions within the premises of the Department of Educational Studies of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (School of Philosophy) in Greece since 2016.  The Laboratory serves various purposes in order for people with disabilities, from the entire spectrum of development, as well as their families, to achieve well-being through education, therapy, support, and advocating of their rights. Those purposes are sought to be achieved through the following provisions:

  • Research aiming to address the educational and therapeutic needs of people with disabilities and the complex needs of their families.
  • Advocating for the rights of people with disabilities for appropriate treatment and education.
  • Advancing the science of the Experimental Analysis of Behavior for the purposes of treatment and education of people with disabilities and promoting the model of Systemic Behavior Analysis which draws from two epistemological paradigms: that of the Experimental Analysis of Behavior and General Systems Theory.
  • Therapeutic and educational services for people with disabilities with an emphasis on Early Intensive Behavioral Interventions for preschoolers with Autism Spectrum Disorder and on educational support for students with Learning Disabilities.
  • Support and supervision to enhance the process of inclusive educational practices
  • Educational and therapeutic services for families of people with disabilities including couple’s and family therapy.
  •  Supervision for therapists and teachers.
  • Organizing conferences, symposia, and other events that promote the purposes of the Laboratory and disseminate the research findings and the practices carried out at the Laboratory.
  • Collaboration with Universities and Research Centers in Greece and abroad aiming to enhance the extraversion of the Laboratory.

The Laboratory's objectives are achieved through the implementation of holistic, systemic, interdisciplinary and evidence-based interventions, following strict research protocols.

The Laboratory is supported by the following staff members:

Petros Galanis, Research and Teaching Assistant of the Department of Educational Studies

The Laboratory of Special Education and Family Counseling is located on the 5th floor of the School of Philosophy (547).
