Open-Access Scientific Publication on “Environmental Education for Sustainability and Citizen Science”
The Environmental Education Lab (EEL-NKUA) of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens is pleased to announce the publication of a new book entitled “Environmental Education for Sustainability and Citizen Science: Integrating Environmental Citizen Observatories into School Educational Practice.”
This volume, edited by Maria Daskolia, Professor and Director of the EEL, and featuring contributions from the Lab’s research assistants and collaborators, was developed as part of the Lab’s participation in the European project Cos4Cloud (Co-designed Citizen Observatories for the EOS-Cloud).
The book, published by the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens Press in electronic open-access format in both Greek and English, is the first publication of its kind in both Greek and international literature to provide a comprehensive overview of the relationship between Environmental Education for Sustainability (EES) and Citizen Science (CS), mediated and supported by Citizen Observatories. A central focus of the volume is the pedagogical use of this relationship in school educational practice.
To this end, the book approaches the topic from both theoretical and practical perspectives. More specifically, Part One provides a concise overview of the identity and relationship between the two fields, explores the opportunities offered by digital technologies and environmental citizen observatory tools, and presents the educationalprinciples and learning opportunities that emerge from integrating Citizen Science principles, practices, and tools into EES school practice. Part Two presents detailed suggestions for instructional implementation in the form of educational scenarios developed by groups of teachers and education professionals who participated in the Cos4Cloud project.
The absence of previous scientific publications on these topics - particularly in Greek literature - makes this volume a valuable resource and, above all, a source of inspiration for undergraduate and postgraduate students in Education Departments, teachers, and educators working in the field of Environmental Education for Sustainability (and beyond). It is intended for those who wish to explore new ways of enriching their educational practice and to experiment with designing new learning experiences for their students, focusing on the promotion of active citizenship and the cultivation of environmental, scientific, and digital literacies.
For these reasons, the book is freely available in open access:
