Department of Educational Studies

PRACTICUM OFFERED TO OTHER DEPARTMENTS OF THE SCHOOL OF PHILOSOPHY

The Department of Educational Studies is responsible for organizing, supervising, and evaluating the Teaching Practicum of undergraduate students from three other Departments of the School of Philosophy, which train future philologists (PE02): History and Archaeology, Philology, and Philosophy. Teaching Practicum is a mandatory component of the relevant theoretical courses (a/ Pedagogy I: Teaching of History: Theory and Practice, 7th semester at the Department of History and Archaeology; b/ Theory and Practice of Teaching – Practicum, 8th semester at the Department of Philology; and c/ Teaching Practicum at the Department of Philosophy).

It is estimated that the Department of Educational Studies trains more than 700 students from the above Departments each academic year.

Students undertake their practicum in secondary school settings in the Attica region (Gymnasium, Gymnasium with Lyceum classes, Lyceum or Vocational Lyceum, Evening Lyceum). They observe 8 teaching implementations in philological-humanistic subjects (History, Ancient Greek, Modern Greek Language and Literature, Latin, Philosophy) and complete a four-page observation protocol for each teaching, in which they are required to identify important aspects of the teaching process. In the theoretical part of the course, taught in a lecture hall, students have the opportunity to critically analyze their observation experience and frame it within theoretical terms. The integration and presence of students in school units provide a valuable opportunity to experience "real" classroom conditions, to reflect on the relationship between theory and teaching practice, and on the appropriateness of educational practices in relation to the goals and aims of teaching, thereby gaining a preliminary awareness of the diverse aspects and demands of educational work.
